Tailscale is a zero-config mesh VPN built on WireGuard that creates secure, private networks between your devices, servers, and cloud infrastructure — without the complexity of traditional VPNs. It uses a peer-to-peer mesh architecture, meaning devices connect directly to each other rather than routing through a central gateway, resulting in faster connections with lower latency. Tailscale is widely used by remote teams, DevOps engineers, and small businesses as a modern alternative to legacy corporate VPNs.

Setting up Tailscale takes minutes: install the app on each device, authenticate with your identity provider (Google, Microsoft, Okta, GitHub), and devices automatically discover and connect to each other with end-to-end encryption. There are no firewall rules to configure, no port forwarding, and no IP address management. Tailscale handles NAT traversal automatically, connecting devices even behind restrictive firewalls and carrier-grade NAT.

The platform includes access control lists (ACLs) defined as code, enabling fine-grained permissions for who can access what. Tailscale Funnel exposes services to the public internet with automatic HTTPS. MagicDNS provides human-readable hostnames for all devices. SSH access can be managed through Tailscale SSH without distributing keys. The admin console provides device inventory, user management, and network activity logs.

Key Features: WireGuard-based mesh VPN with peer-to-peer connections, zero-config setup with identity provider authentication, end-to-end encryption between all devices, automatic NAT traversal (works behind any firewall), access control lists (ACLs) as code, MagicDNS for device name resolution, Tailscale SSH (no key management), Tailscale Funnel for public HTTPS endpoints, subnet routers for connecting legacy networks, exit nodes for secure internet browsing, multi-factor authentication support, SSO with Google/Microsoft/Okta/GitHub, admin console with device management, audit logging and compliance features, and apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and NAS devices.

Pricing: Personal plan is free for up to 100 devices and 3 users. Starter plan at $5/user/month includes up to 50 users, custom ACLs, and admin controls. Premium plan at $18/user/month adds SCIM provisioning, posture management, and advanced features. Enterprise plan with custom pricing for large organizations. All plans include unlimited data transfer. No bandwidth caps or throttling.

Use Cases: Secure remote access to office and home networks, DevOps access to cloud servers and Kubernetes clusters, connecting self-hosted services across locations, remote worker secure internet browsing via exit nodes, IoT device management and remote access, accessing NAS and home lab services remotely, replacing legacy corporate VPN infrastructure, securing development and staging environments, multi-cloud networking between AWS/GCP/Azure, and team access to shared databases and internal tools.
