Exam Structure

Part 1 — Essentials of Internal Auditing (125 questions, 2.5 hours): Foundations of internal auditing, independence and objectivity, proficiency and due professional care, quality assurance and improvement program, governance/risk/control, fraud risks, IIA Standards
Part 2 — Practice of Internal Auditing (100 questions, 2 hours): Managing the internal audit activity, planning the engagement, performing the engagement, communicating results, monitoring progress
Part 3 — Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing (100 questions, 2 hours): Business acumen, information security, information technology, financial management
Format: Computer-based, multiple choice at Pearson VUE centers worldwide
Passing score: Scaled score of 600 out of 750
Time limit: Must pass all 3 parts within 4 years of registration

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree (any field) from an accredited institution — OR — current full-time student in a bachelor's program (can take the exam while still in school)
Experience: 2 years of internal audit experience (bachelor's) or 1 year (master's/PhD). Experience must be verified by a CIA or supervisor. Must be completed within 5 years of passing.
Character reference: Must be of good moral character, vouched for by a CIA, supervisor, or professor
Continuing Education: 40 hours per year of CPE (at least 2 in ethics per 2-year period)
