Matt McGarry is the founder of Newsletter Operator and GrowLetter, and one of the most respected newsletter growth experts in the creator economy. His clients collectively have over 15.4 million email subscribers, and he has personally helped newsletters like The Hustle, Milk Road, and Sahil Bloom's newsletter add over 2 million subscribers through proven paid and organic growth strategies.

Content covers how to grow a newsletter from zero to 50,000+ subscribers, newsletter monetization strategies including ads, sponsorships, and paid subscriptions, paid acquisition tactics for newsletter growth (Meta ads, Twitter ads, recommendation networks), newsletter cross-promotion and recommendation strategies, building a newsletter as a standalone media business, newsletter content strategy and writing frameworks, email deliverability and open rate optimization, newsletter platform comparisons (Beehiiv vs Substack vs ConvertKit), how to sell sponsorships and build an ad sales pipeline, and newsletter business economics — costs, revenue models, and profitability benchmarks.

What makes Matt exceptional is his combination of hands-on agency experience and transparent education. Through GrowLetter, his agency, he has managed newsletter growth campaigns for some of the biggest newsletters in the world, giving him real data and insights that most educators lack. Newsletter Operator, his own newsletter and podcast (co-hosted with Ryan Carr), shares these insights with over 50,000 subscribers — covering everything from growth tactics to monetization case studies. His content is refreshingly tactical and data-driven, with specific numbers, strategies, and examples rather than vague advice. He regularly breaks down exactly how top newsletters grow, what they spend on acquisition, and how they monetize, providing a playbook that aspiring newsletter operators can follow.

Matt monetizes through GrowLetter — his newsletter growth agency working with major media brands and creators, the Newsletter Operator newsletter and podcast, consulting and advisory services for newsletter businesses, speaking engagements at creator economy events, and his website newsletteroperator.com with free guides and resources.

For Moonlite users, the newsletter business model is one of the most accessible and scalable online businesses available today. Starting a newsletter costs virtually nothing (Beehiiv and Substack offer free tiers), and newsletters can be monetized through sponsorships ($25-$50+ CPM), paid subscriptions ($5-$15/month), affiliate partnerships, and recommendation networks like Beehiiv Boosts. Successful newsletter operators earn $50,000-$500,000+ annually, with top newsletters generating millions. The key advantage is audience ownership — unlike social media followers, email subscribers are a direct, algorithmically independent asset. Matt McGarry and Newsletter Operator provide the growth playbook and monetization strategies that turn newsletters from side projects into profitable media businesses.
