Gergely Orosz is the creator of The Pragmatic Engineer, the #1 software engineering and technology newsletter on Substack with over 1.1 million subscribers. A former senior engineer and engineering manager at Uber, Microsoft/Skype, and Skyscanner, Gergely left Big Tech to write full-time and has built one of the most profitable solo creator businesses in the tech space, earning over $1 million per year from his newsletter alone.

His content covers software engineering career advice, Big Tech hiring and compensation, engineering management, system design, startup engineering culture, AI engineering trends, layoffs and industry analysis, and deep dives into how top tech companies actually build and ship products. Gergely also hosts The Pragmatic Engineer Podcast, featuring interviews with senior engineers and leaders from companies like Google, Meta, Stripe, and emerging startups.

What makes Gergely exceptional is his insider perspective. Having worked as both an IC engineer and engineering manager at companies like Uber, he provides analysis that is genuinely informed by real experience building large-scale systems and managing engineering teams. His newsletter issues like The Pulse (weekly industry roundup) and deep-dive articles are considered essential reading across the tech industry.

Gergely monetizes through his paid Substack subscription, book sales (The Software Engineers Guidebook, Building Mobile Apps at Scale), podcast sponsorships, and speaking engagements. With 553K+ followers on X/Twitter and a massive LinkedIn presence, he has built one of the most influential voices in software engineering.

For Moonlite users, Gergely Orosz demonstrates how a mid-career tech professional can leverage deep domain expertise into a $1M+/year solo media business. His newsletter-first approach, combined with books and a podcast, shows how expertise-driven content can outperform traditional tech careers in both income and impact.
