I Tried Reselling on 4 Different Platforms — Here's What Actually Sold

I spent 60 days testing reselling on Mercari, StockX, Vinted, and Facebook Marketplace with a $500 starting budget. Here's what happened.

Platform Results

Selling on Mercari

  • Best for: General items, clothing, home goods
  • Avg time to sell: 4 days | Fees: 10%
  • Result: $312 revenue on $140 spent = $172 profit
  • Verdict: Fastest sales, broadest audience. Great for beginners.

Selling on StockX

  • Best for: Sneakers, streetwear, collectibles
  • Avg time to sell: 2 days | Fees: 12–13%
  • Result: $420 revenue on $280 spent = $140 profit
  • Verdict: Highest revenue but tightest margins. Need to know the market.

Selling on Vinted

  • Best for: Clothing, especially women's fashion
  • Avg time to sell: 8 days | Fees: 0% seller fees
  • Result: $180 revenue on $60 spent = $120 profit
  • Verdict: Zero seller fees is amazing. Slower but best margin percentage.

Facebook Marketplace

  • Best for: Furniture, electronics, local pickup
  • Avg time to sell: 2 days local, 6 shipped | Fees: 0–5%
  • Result: $275 revenue on $120 spent = $155 profit
  • Verdict: Best for bulky items. Flaky buyers are the tradeoff.

Key Lessons

  1. Platform-product fit matters most. Sneakers on StockX, clothes on Vinted, everything else on Mercari.
  2. Photos sell items. Same jacket, bad photo = 3 likes. Good photo = sold in 2 hours.
  3. Weekends are prime time. 70% of sales happened Friday–Sunday.
  4. Start with what you own. Selling from your closet = 100% profit.

Which reselling platform has worked best for you? Any sourcing tips?
