Why Everyone's Wrong About Dropshipping in 2026 (It's Not Dead, It's Different)

Every year someone declares "dropshipping is dead." Every year, people still make money with it. Here's what's actually happening.

What IS Dead

  • AliExpress → Shopify general stores. 15–30 day shipping from China doesn't cut it anymore. Customers expect 3–5 day delivery.
  • Facebook ad arbitrage. CPMs are up 40% since 2023. You can't just throw up a product page and run $50/day in ads profitably.
  • "Winning product" hunting. By the time you find it on a spy tool, 500 other people are already selling it.

What's Actually Working

  • US/domestic suppliers. Companies like Zendrop, CJDropshipping (US warehouse), and AutoDS now offer 3–5 day shipping. Dropshipping with fast shipping is a completely different game.
  • TikTok Shop + organic content. The biggest wins come from TikTok creators who build content around products, not cold ads. A $0 ad spend model that converts.
  • Niche stores over general stores. A store that sells only home office gear converts 3x better than a random product store.
  • Branded dropshipping. Custom packaging, branded inserts, private labeling. Turns a commodity into a "brand."

The Numbers in 2026

  • Average successful niche store: $3K–$8K/month revenue, 20–30% margins
  • Startup cost (realistic): $500–$1,500 for Shopify + initial ad testing
  • Time to first sale: 2–6 weeks with organic TikTok, 1–2 weeks with paid ads
  • Failure rate: Still high (80%+), mostly because people quit in week 2

Are you still doing dropshipping in 2026? What's working for you right now?
