Most brands fail because they forget who can actually afford them.

Starting a clothing business

I learned this from a professional who work as a tech pack designer, so he see how products are built from start to finish.

Brands don’t die because they’re “not trendy.” They die because they never defined their customer’s budget.

He has worked with two very different types of brands:

Kidswear brand
Target: middle-income parents
Price limit: around $20
Every design, fabric, and detail had to match that price point.

Women’s resortwear brand
Target: upper-middle class
Price range: up to $350
They used premium fabrics, special dyeing, in-house tailors, and partnered with influencers.
Their customers could afford it, and expected that level of quality.

Both brands succeeded because they were crystal clear about who they were selling to.

The kidswear brand used bright, bold prints.
The resortwear brand used soft gradients that weren’t even trending.
Both worked , because they matched their audience.

But many new brands get idealistic. They want to “change the market” or “educate customers.”
The truth is: the market won’t change just because you want it to.

That’s why before starting any tech pack, always ask:

“Who’s buying this, and will they pay for it?”

That single answer guides everything: materials, trims, details, the final look.
A good product fits the customer, not just the designer’s vision.
