I’ve been in security for a few years now stable job, decent salary, not miserable or anything… but lately, I’ve been getting this pull to try something on my own.
The idea of offering security services maybe audits, small business consulting, or helping companies clean up basic stuff they’ve ignored sounds way more rewarding than sitting in meetings and waiting for someone above me to approve change.
But I keep asking myself is this smart timing or a total overreach? With AI and small businesses becoming more digital, it feels like the need for basic cybersecurity is growing. But I also know it’s tough to get clients to care until something bad happens.
So if anyone here has made the leap even part-time, what helped you start? Was it niche services, word of mouth, freelancing platforms? And how did you know it was time to walk away from the paycheck?
Would love to hear from anyone who's tried or even thought about going solo in this space. I'm trying to figure out if this is one of those now or never moments or just me being overly idealistic.
