The only exceptions you might run into:
Background checks – A few specialized sites might charge a small fee if the task requires it (e.g., mystery shopping or work with sensitive data).
Paid certifications/tests – Rare, but some platforms offer optional skill tests that you can pay for to unlock higher-paying work.
Scams – If a “microtask site” asks you to pay just to sign up, that’s a red flag.
Legit rule of thumb: If they want money before you can work, walk away.
