Passive income: NO

Proofreader
Earning passive income as a proofreader is challenging because the nature of the work is inherently active. Proofreading requires attention to detail and personal involvement, making it difficult to automate or outsource without compromising quality. While some may attempt to create passive income by building a team or developing software tools, these approaches often require significant upfront investment and ongoing management, which isn't truly passive. Most people in the proofreading community, as seen on platforms like Reddit and YouTube, report that achieving passive income is rare. The majority continue to actively work for income, with only a few outliers managing to create passive systems through extensive outsourcing or by leveraging technology. In my experience and from community stories, those who achieve passive income typically have a strong business acumen and are able to scale their operations effectively. However, this is not the norm, and many fall for the myth that proofreading can easily become passive without understanding the complexities involved. Realistically, it becomes passive for those who can innovate and manage a business, but not for those who simply want to proofread as a side hustle.
